Pregnancy calendar - week 7

Deborah Sue, Advisory Service Manager

There are a lot of do’s and don’ts to know about when you are pregnant. Alcohol is definitely on the don’ts list, because what you drink, your baby drinks too –so the best thing you can do is to totally abstain from alcohol during your pregnancy. If you would like to talk more with us about this, get in touch with our team of experts.

Now is the time to visit your health care professional

Your health care professional will take you through a series of tests and record your medical history. Tests will include blood tests to check your blood group, antibodies levels, and iron, as well as your immunity. They might also offer some screening blood tests that check for a range of rare birth defects. Basic checks on your blood pressure and weight will also be included, and you might also take a urine test. An early ultrasound scan may be recommended if you’re unsure of your due date or there’s anything unclear with your dates.

Did you know?

Now that you’re pregnant, your immune system isn’t as effective as usual. This occurs because of the normal bodily changes that take place during pregnancy. This means that it’s important to be extra careful with preparing your food, washing your hands and knowing which foods to avoid.

Your baby’s development

At this point in your pregnancy, your baby’s head is one third of its total length and the umbilical cord has formed. This cord is attached to your placenta and is the vital connection between you and baby throughout the pregnancy. It will provide all the oxygen and nourishment your baby needs, while also removing waste. How handy is that!

Tiny breathing passages are already beginning to appear where your baby’s lungs will be. Their arms and legs are taking a more definite shape, the hands and feet are beginning to appear and the embryo already looks a little bit more like a little baby! Toes and fingers are forming, although right now they have thick webbing between them which will disappear in time. The nostrils are becoming more defined and the tip of their nose is starting to emerge.

You & your body

If you’ve been used to having a drink now and again, as soon as you find out your pregnant it will be time to stop.

The amount of alcohol that you can safely drink during pregnancy is unknown, so the best advice you can follow for what’s best for your baby is to avoid alcohol altogether. For more information on the effects of alcohol in pregnancy talk with your health care professional. Our team of caring experts at Kariclub are also happy to answer any questions you may have.
