Pregnancy calendar - week 16

Deborah Sue, Advisory Service Manager

Have you developed any pregnancy food cravings yet? A lot of pregnant women wonder why they suddenly feel the need to eat a certain type of food or other substance. (Some cravings are stranger than others!) Taste sensitivity and food preferences change throughout pregnancy but remember it is important to avoid those foods that may be harmful to you and your baby even if you find yourself craving them.

Your baby’s development

Your baby is now around 12 cm long, weighs 110 grams and has tiny little fingernails and toenails at the end of their growing hands and feet.

Although it may still be too early to feel your baby inside you, they can now turn their head and exercise all 40 sets of muscles. You may be able to see your baby’s facial expressions during an ultrasound scan, especially frowning and squinting. Although their eyelids are still closed, they can sense light from outside their cosy little world.

Did you know?

If your eyes are feeling dry and itchy, it is probably just those pregnancy hormones at work again. Your health care professional will be able to prescribe some eye drops that can help and if you wear contact lenses, you may be better off wearing your glasses for a while.

You & your body

Many women say that they get pregnancy food cravings, ranging from hot, spicy curries to fruits that are sour or salty snacks.

If the craving is not too extreme and the food item is safe to eat then it can usually be indulged without too much concern – although your partner may not appreciate being woken in the night to be told to go out and buy your latest craving! Just try to make sure you’re eating a balanced diet and you’ll be fine.

Some women suffer from ‘pica’, a craving for non-food items including everything from dirt, to plaster and paint chips from walls, clay, or even washing powder and chalk. Obviously it’s best to resist these urges as such things can be harmful to your baby and you! If you feel you have these cravings, do discuss them with your health care professional.
