Pregnancy calendar - week 15

Christa Riekert, Advisory Nutritionist

After the first trimester of low energy and morning sickness, many women may be starting to feel a bit more like themselves now and be re-energised. However, if you are finding your energy levels are still waning why not call us for some tips on eating well for improving well being.

Your baby’s development

You are both continuing to grow, and your baby now measures about 10 cm. Their skeletal system continues to develop with the bones beginning to harden. The fine downy hair, called lanugo, is starting to appear on their skin which is still very thin and translucent.

Your baby now has taste buds and is starting to make different facial expressions as facial muscles develop and eyebrows form – all of which makes them look more baby-like. Your baby is busy inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid, which helps their lungs develop. Their legs are growing longer than their arms and, in anticipation for all those kicks later in your pregnancy; your baby can move all of their joints!

Did you know?

Lots of mums-to-be feel as if their memory isn’t as sharp as usual and your concentration span might not be as good either (some call it ‘baby brain’!). Recent research suggests that this is not necessarily the case, whilst others suggest that it is due to your brain changing size while you’re expecting. If you do notice a change it may just be the simple fact of having a lot on your mind about the future or nature’s way of slowing you down!

You & your body

At 15 weeks you might find that you’re salivating more and you may have a stuffy nose. Nose bleeds are more likely in pregnancy because of nasal congestion from all the hormonal changes and the increase in blood volume that comes with growing a whole little person inside you! Nose bleeds however should always be discussed with your doctor or midwife. Try applying a little plain moisturising ointment (like petroleum jelly) to each nostril and keep up your fluid intake too.

If you’re thinking of taking some medication, be sure to ask your health care professional.
