When my baby was born

Date written 18/12/2008 12:17:59

When my baby was born I really wanted to breastfeed him but for some reason it just wasn't going to be easy. Firstly my milk didn't come in so my baby was starving and ended up developing jaundice! My midwife recommended I give formula which I did so that my baby was receiving nutrition. Secondly my nipples became cracked and bleeding and it was too painful to feed. I cried to my midwife about it and her advice was brilliant - she told me that once the breast milk is "in" that it takes a few days to dry out, so I could formula feed while my nipples healed and then try to breastfeed again. This I did and after a bit of effort was able to re-establish breastfeeding. Mind you I never did have a great supply so I had to supplement my breast milk with formula. My healthy little man is now nearly 2!

Breastfeeding can be interesting.

Breastfeeding can be interesting.
I was lucky to be able to breastfeed for 6+ months, but it wasn_t always easy. In my baby group, I have some of the most interesting breastfeeding places, as have had to make do with my surroundings. At a half day event, I had to make the most of the breaks, racing off to the ladies to breastfeed in the handicapped toilet, as nowhere else. Being a conservative Mum, didn_t want to flash my boobs to the predominately male participants. The other was for two client meetings. I had my Mum babysitting, but had to feed between meetings. Due to time constraints ended up feeding in the Albany carpark. Great for changing nappies in the boot of the car too!
Being a Mum no matter what age is exciting.
Being a first time Mum at 37 is exciting, but also scary. You seem to be given so much advise, & material to read. I think half of what I read, gave me nightmares. Your chances are higher for problems, but we went through the Auckland Obstetrics Centre & they made us feel so at ease.
We were so lucky to have a beautiful baby boy, who_s smile just lights up the room. He has changed our life in more ways than you can imagine & it was all so worth it. Every day is different, but when Brayden smiles at you & chats away in his own language, I know I wouldn_t have it any other way.

Date written 07/04/2009 03:55:42

my first son would not even latch on my brest, so i placed him on formula.
but when my second son was born he helped him self. you know as soon as you give birth the nurse cleans them up and gives them back so you can feed them will befor the nurse could come around the bed to show me he was on and no one could get him off the next 45mins. Thank god untill today he has not changed.
I guess every child is different

As breastfeeding mother's know, those first few weeks and months

Date written 18/12/2008 12:09:09

As breastfeeding mother’s know, those first few weeks and months with your newborn are very tiring, with constant feeds. One of my most lovely memories of my now 21 month old daughter was one night when my husband brought her in to our bed for a feed. I’d gotten into the (great!) habit of feeding Lauren during the night whilst lying down in bed – that way my husband could bring her to me, change her afterwards, if need be, and return her to her cot! This particular night, we were all so tired, that we all feel asleep mid-feed! I remember that during the rest of that night, as my daughter remained latched on to my breast, she helped herself to more milk as needed. It was a wonderful feeling, to be gently woken by the sensation of my tiny daughter feeding herself and to be able to give her a cuddle as we both went back to sleep! I treasure those days of having a beautiful little baby entirely dependent on me – it lasts such a short time!
